Mijas Costa del Sol - City Guide

Perched on the mountainside above Fuengirola, Mijas is a charming village with a character all of its own. Narrow streets weave around the town square with its café’s and bars inviting one to explore deeper into the towns sleepy past.

A reminder of times gone by, the donkey taxis – yes donkeys! – will take you on a tour of the town in much the same way as the residents might have traveled for centuries. Picturesque in their colourful bridles and saddles, the donkeys are as much a part of Mijas as the orange and lemon trees which line the streets.

The views from Mijas are quite breathtaking. The splendor of the coast lies below and the sparkling lights of the coastal strip at night are enchanting. But the true beauty of Mijas lies, perhaps, not in the town, or the views, but rather in the wonderful countryside which surrounds the town itself. Only a few minutes from the modern day hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol is countryside which surprises even the most seasoned visitor.

When one imagines the Spanish countryside with wild flowers and herbs it is Mijas that one envisages. Take a stroll out of the town, and in minutes you are surrounded by the rich scent of rosemary and thyme and a breathtaking array of colours.

But don’t think for a moment that Mijas is lost in the wilds of Andalucía. Far from it. The town centre is a five minute drive from the coastal highway, and, with its own exit, Mijas is easily accessible. And, of course, this means that life in Mijas means one enjoys the best of both worlds – the peace and quiet of the mountains as well as everything the coast has to offer. There are several golf courses in the Mijas area with more currently under construction. And Fuengirola - just down the hill – has a dazzling array of leisure activities from which to choose. Cinemas, ten pin bowling, water parks, shopping centres and more in addition to the exceptional choice of restaurants serving food from around the world.

Property in Mijas is generally less expensive than comparable property on the coast, but a Mijas property offers a lifestyle which it is often difficult to find on the coast. There are many foreign residents in Mijas, indeed it is one of the few towns in Spain where the foreign community matches the Spanish in number. As a result the local authorities are even more conscious of the needs of foreigners than in other towns, and this can be a huge advantage to anyone looking to make their move to Spain permanent. In fact, such is the number of international residents, many of the local schools now teach in a bilingual environment.

So whether you choose an apartment in Mijas on one of the newer developments or a townhouse in the pueblo proper Mijas has much to offer.
